SAVE THE DATE: NC State University's 10th Annual Vermiculture Conference will be held in Durham, North Carolina on May 27-28, 2010. This is the only conference about earthworm farming and mid-to-large-scale vermicomposting held in the United States. Details about the conference are at http://www.bae.ncsu.edu/workshops/worm-conference/ At the 2009 conference, we had 10 speakers and 85 participants from 17 U.S. states, plus Puerto Rico, British Columbia and Ontario, Canada. ALERT: Read Herbicide Carryover in Hay, Manure, Compost, & Grass Clippings: Caution to Hay Producers, Livestock Owners, Farmers & Home Gardeners (Davis, J. & Johnson, S. E., North Carolina Cooperative Extension, 7/09). Certain herbicides can remain active in hay, straw, grass clippings, manure, and compost (very important information!). Workshops on VERMICOMPOSTING and COMPOSTING and RECYCLING are offered periodically throughout the year. If you would like to be notified of upcoming workshops, e-mail rhonda_sherman@ncsu.edu and ask to be added to the list. Please indicate the topics of interest to you, such as earthworm farming, vermicomposting at home or in schools, large-scale composting, backyard composting, recycling, waste reduction, etc. and include your city and state or country. NCSU hosted the Commercial Composting and Compost Use 40-hour training course on September 8-12, 2008. The widely-hailed compost operator training course was offered by the North Carolina Composting Council, a state committee of the U.S. Composting Council. The next course will be offered in 2011.
