Pollute Your Water, Pollute
Yourself
Pollute Your Water, Pollute Yourself is a Foundation
Issue because it lays the framework for your citizens to understand more
complex stormwater issues. Pollute Your Water, Pollute Yourself is about
making the connection between water quality and quality of life. You can
highlight the unique water resources of your jurisdiction – these could
include your drinking water sources (whether it’s surface or groundwater),
beautiful streams, lakes or coastlines, fishing, boating or swimming
opportunities. Let your citizens know that they each have responsibility
for maintaining these resources that they all enjoy.
Target Audiences
All citizens in your jurisdiction.
Approaches
Look for positive and fun ways to educate your citizens
about the importance of water quality. Holding events or setting up
displays at existing events in an excellent way to introduce this concept
to them. It is also a good idea to start a public outreach program such as
Adopt-A-Stream to raise awareness and interest in water pollution. Try to
involve school children since they will often bring the message home to
their parents.
