Measure 1d: Disseminate public
education materials
“Distribute written materials through utility mailouts,
at special events and at high traffic businesses.”
By the time you reach Measure 1d, you will have:
- Selected your Action Issues,
- Determined the timing of your Foundation and Action Issues, and
- Determined your Target Audiences and Approaches for these issues.
NOW, HOW SHOULD YOU GET THE WORD OUT? You need to use the
techniques that will effectively reach your target audiences. Here are
some tips:
Tip 1: Utilize multiple media and directly
connect your message to local water resources that are most important to
the community. A mix of activities from purely informational messages to
hands-on activities to technical training may be required to meet all the
education needs in a community.
Tip 2. The more times you repeat the message, the
more your citizens will remember it and take actions to improve stormwater
quality.
Tip 3. Sometimes simply informing and educating
people on the issues is not enough – you have to identify and remove the
barriers that have prevented citizens from implementing the recommended
behavior. For example, you can make it easier for people to test their
soil before they apply lawn fertilizer: sponsor a soil test day on which a
local garden supply store hands out free soil test kits and demonstrates
their use.
Tip 4. The precise needs are different from
community to community and can best be determined only by the community.
