LID & Urban Design
March 11, 2010
Watauga County Agricultural Conference Center
252 Poplar Grove Road
Boone, NC 28607
Course overview
Low Impact Development (LID) is typically defined as a stormwater management design framework aimed at minimizing the negative impacts of stormwater runoff. LID includes: mimicking pre-development hydrology, tree conservation, maximizing open space, maintenance, structural practices, and education. LID began as an organized framework in the 1990s.
Urban Design is the discipline between planning and architecture. It gives three-dimensional physical form to policies described in a comprehensive plan. It focuses on design of the public realm, which is created by both public spaces and the buildings that define them. Urban design views these spaces holistically and is concerned with bringing together the different disciplines responsible for the components of cities into a unified vision. Key elements of an urban design plan include the plan itself, the preparation of design guidelines for buildings, the design of the public realm- the open space, streets, sidewalks, and plazas between and around buildings. (Excerpted from Planning and Urban Design Standards, 2006).
This course addresses LID in the context of urban design. The overarching goal is to develop urban design and LID guidelines for a project or community from North Carolina and to use this “hands-on” approach to teach principles outlined for the course. The project will be chosen from submissions (you may submit project ideas to Dwane Jones at dwane_jones@ncsu.edu) or chosen by the instructor.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to apply basic principles of urban design and integrate LID principles and practices to form a comprehensive, holistic public realm for a “real-world” project.
This course is organized into the following:
- What is Urban Design?
- What is LID (brief overview)?
- Urban Design Plan for Project (group/class project)
