  1. Water Harvesting
  2. Infiltration Practices
  3. Street Design

Low Impact Development (LID) is a development technique that seeks to protect the environment through intelligent design. LID means to design, construct, and maintain each development site to mimic the natural hydrology of that site. Although LID as a concept is well-accepted in NC, it is difficult for developers to implement the technique in many areas of the state because development ordinances are often outdated and do not allow LID practices and concepts to be implemented.

NCSU is leading the initiative to review a number of local ordinances in NC with regard to water harvesting, infiltration practices, and street design to determine what issues exist as barriers to the implementation of LID in NC. The first phase of the project is to review ordinances for hindrances related to water harvesting. To be considered for this project, please complete and submit the following form.

D. National rainwater harvesting committee (design guidance manual)

NCSU currently chairs the National LID Rainwater Harvesting Committee. The committee is tasked with creating national guidelines for the implementation of rainwater harvesting. The end product will be a design manual. For more information on this committee, please email Dwane Jones at dwane_jones@ncsu.edu

E. NC Lid Group

NC is rapidly urbanizing. As such, professionals in NC have accepted the benefits of the use of LID to facilitate our development process. This demand for greater knowledge and discourse on topics pertaining to LID has necessitated the creation of the NC Low Impact Development Group. The program will begin as a virtually community, of sorts, and hopefully will lead to a physical location for research and demonstration projects for the benefit of interested individuals and groups across this great state. For more information or to become involved, please email Dwane Jones at dwane_jones@ncsu.edu
