Two rain garden trenches totaling 4800 square feet in area were excavated along the north and west edges of the existing parking lot. The trenches were excavated to a depth of 9 inches. They were then filled with an organic soil mixture (screened topsoil with a turkey compost mix), shredded hardwood mulch and plants.

A portion of the excavated soil was used to build a low berm (1’) around the downstream edge of the garden. Bermuda sod was then installed along the berm and along the upstream edge of the rain garden at the east end of the parking lot. Zoyza Crowne sod was used to stabilize the berm along the rain garden on the south side of the marina parking lot. Zoyza Crowne was used on the south side because it is more tolerant of the shade that occurs for much of the day on the south side of the parking lot.
The rain gardens are designed to temporarily hold 1 inch of stormwater runoff after it rains. The rain gardens were planted with a mix of native trees and shrubs (see Table1). Permanent concrete stops were added along the edge of the parking lot to prevent cars and boat trailers from driving over the rain garden area.
