Overview

Carolina Beach State Park is a 761-acre park located on a triangle of land known as Pleasure Island in New Hanover County, N.C. Carolina Beach State Park borders the fresh waters of the Cape Fear River and the estuarine waters of Masonboro Sound. A marina with two launching ramps and more than 40 boat slips is located at the junction of Snow's Cut and the Cape Fear River. The marina includes a large parking facility to the south of the marina. A large portion of the marina parking lot formerly drained directly into Snow’s Cut without any filtration or treatment.

In May of 2005, North Carolina State Biological and Agricultural Eingineering Department was rewarded a grant from NOAA thru the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Division of Coastal Management. The grant was a demonstration project aimed to implement stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce non-point source pollution from Carolina Beach State Park Marina parking lot before entering the Cape Fear River.  Three structural stormwater BMPs including biorentions, reinforced turf parking and inlet slip filters.  Below shows the plan drawing for the park.
