What is Bioretention? Meet the Researchers

Bill Hunt, Ph.D., P.E.

Bill Hunt

Dr. William F. Hunt ("Bill") is actively involved with Best Management Practices (BMP) research in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department and is the leader of the Stormwater Research Group.

Bill has been a lifelong Wolfpack fan and received his two B.S. (Civil Engineering and Economics) and one M.S. (Biological and Agricultural Engineering) degrees from NC State. Bill received his Ph.D. from Penn State University in 2003.

The only topic Bill loves more than bioretention is Wolfpack sports.

Robert Brown, E.I.

Robert Brown

Rob is pursuing his Ph.D. under the direction of Dr. Hunt. His research is on bioretention performance in the upper coastal plain of NC, and he is looking at impacts of construction on bioretention performance. The focus of his dissertation is on the impacts of media depth and use of internal water storage zones on bioretention performance and modeling bioretention with DRAINMOD. One of his projects involves monitoring a Wal-Mart that has several low-impact development practices. His goal is for other major shopping centers to follow course.

In 2007, he graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. After spending his entire life in the Philadelphia area and Happy Valley, he decided to head south to try out a different environment. In 2009, he received a M.B.A.E. degree from N.C. State University.

Rob's passion for the outdoors is a major reason why he chose the water resources engineering field. In his spare time, he enjoys golfing, hiking, and fishing. He is very passionate about PSU football, although he has started to adjust to following Wolfpack sports.

The following Extension Field Faculty are actively involved in bioretention demonstration and research:
Bill Lord, Area Environmental Agent - Franklin County
Allen Caldwell, County Extension Director - Caldwell County
Eric Caldwell, County Extension Director - Transylvania County
Seth Nagy, Agricultural Agent - Caldwell County
Mitch Woodward, Area Environmental Agent - Wake County
