The Research Shop at Weaver Labs is the largest open area of space in the building. It was wisely built this way to accommodate large-scale machinery and equipment being built for agriculture as well as to support the machinery and supplies needed to create these agricultural projects.
The shop is the center of activity for the Department. It’s where the concepts and ideas of faculty, extension specialists, technical staff, and students develop from paper, numbers, and drawings to a physical and often working model, proto-type, or final. The shop often creates the housings needed for other electronic and biomaterial projects which the department creates regularly.

The shop is currently a fully functioning machine and welding shop which hosts machinery such as lathes, milling machines, bending and cutting equipment, and a full range of welding equipment. The Research Shop also hosts basic wood working equipment and a full range of hand tools.
While a project is being created inconsistencies and adjustments to concepts come to light and the expertise and good judgment of the craftsman is employed. Updating machinery is important to extend the abilities of the shop as new technologies reveal themselves in the course of fabrication.
The shop is supervised for safety and currently has four full-time craftsmen employed in fabrication, maintenance, or repair projects. To initiate a project a consultation with the shop supervisor David Buffaloe is needed. He will fill out paper work, discuss the project, and then schedule and direct the project through the shop.

The department is especially proud of the work the shop has produced over the years. The Research Shop has produced several quality crafted projects:

  • Cucumber Harvester
  • Sweet Potato Harvester
  • Tobacco Baler
  • Exchanger for Tobacco Barns
The Research Shop also does work for other departments on campus, as the departmental work load permits. Research Shop products are in use throughout the state of North Carolina.
