The new trend in web site design is to provide tools for the average person to create pages which become part of a web community (My space, YouTube) or business/gov. web sites. In the future more large sites will put in place generic web-interface tools that will enable the average person to add information to a site or update pages on existing sites. People will do it using new user-friendly web portals and little or know knowledge of how the site operates. The big WEB entities like Goggle, Yahoo, MSN etc. and browsers Explorer, and Mozilla etc. are all developing tools and bundles which aim to enrich peoples two-way web communications and it will soon revolutionizes the way the web currently operates (communicates).

The need for accessible design of web pages has already changed the way things are done on the web. Many of us have learned to make a simple web page but these pages are often not accessible to the disabled. New standards of web design have changed how we think about creating web pages. Today CSS (cascading style sheets) are utilized. CSS is a seprate instruction page(s) which are called by a server to tell the browser how to render your page in new XML strict or transitional language as opposed to plain html. These changes have been made to provide a truly rich web experience for everyone surfing a site abled or disabled.

Creating XML strict and compliant pages requires new knowledge and new improved software like Dreamweaver CSS, programming and database integration. There's currently a considerable learning curve and an investment in time required to get started with site-wide template and tool-heavy web page creation. Today, teams of graphic and web developers are producing large business and government sites to be compliant, compact, and to establish a working base for adding new two-way communication tools of the near future.

Currently, the university, colleges and departments are all working to establish accessibly compliant, user friendly, and easy to update web pages. All entities are researching, testing, and immersed in the steeped learning curve to work out the best and fastest ways to get it all up on the web.

Translate on the web- You can translate web pages written in other languages,read the page content or translate just a few words.

Online Back-up
You can save documents online using an internet storage service. You can choose to keep files private or share them. Services either charge or offer some free storage then charge to expand. Caution: In this case you are putting information on another companies server so consider carefully what kinds of information you trust elsewhere. read this article

Sending large files - Other than using the BAE server space if you are at home and need to send a large file you can use an on-line services to send your file. Many are free or come with a size limitations but also remember do not to send sensitive data this way.

Phone from your computer - Make free computer phone calls with your computer. There are two ways to make a phone call over the internet computer to computer and computer to phone. The ability to do this ('VOIP' or Voice Over Internet Protocol) has been around awhile (I used it myself in the 1990's) however, the poor clarity/words dropped made it not an option. Things are changing the quality has improved and calls are free or reasonable (at least for now). Hook-up your microphone and speakers get the free software. Also see VOIP at NC State. Publications are subject to NCSU Printing Rules and Policies (see right panel. There are also rules for graphic identy and style and content. All these rules can be found at the NCSU Graphic Identy Site. (Do not take on a printing job without following proper procedures). Publications today can be made ready for both print and web at the same time using In-Design software and upgrade from other publishing programs like Pagemaker, Word, Publisher etc.

However, converting files to PDF is also a powerful way to make printed materials available on the web. Acrobat WRITER is used to make a PDF file. The free Acrobat Reader will not make a PDF file it will only read one. On the web you can go to sites that will write a PDF File for you for free on a trial basis before you need to pay. You can also use freeware or get PDFfactory (see sherry for PDFfactory download). What is nice about the Acrobat PDF writer software is it automatically installs a menu option right into the menu option of many popular software packages. Note: The free Acrobat Reader will not make a PDF file only read one. You can get the Writer part of Acrobat (called distiller) bundled with the reader in Acrobat Professional or as a stand alone.

Extension Publications - These are produced at CALS Communication Services. These publication go into the Extension Publication Database and therefore are given a publication number. The final publication is posted on the BAE web under the BAE extension publication page.
