Sending large e-mails
The NCSU mail servers do not allow users to send e-mail larger than 15Mbytes. Often e-mail programs add extra information to the message making the actual size larger than what you think it should be. This means the maximum size for e-mail messages at NCSU is actually less than 15Mbytes. If you want to send e-mail that is larger than this limit, there are two recommended alternatives for transferring your data.
- Split your e-mail or attachment into several smaller messages and send them out separately. This is the easiest method, but not always the most practical.
- Copy your e-mail or attachment to the following directory. You can keep your file in its original form when you do this and do not have to break it up into smaller messages. NOTE - Once you copy your file, anyone on the internet will have access to your file!
/afs/eos.ncsu.edu/engrwww/bae/outgoing/ (Unix)
J: \eos\engrwww\bae\outgoing (PC)
After your file is copied, you can ask your intended recipient to download the file from the following web site. There may be more than one file at this location, so make sure you tell your recipient the name of your file.
http://www.bae.ncsu.edu/outgoing/
Once your recipient has downloaded the file, you can delete your files from the same directory that you copied them into. The system will automatically delete all files in this directory every Sunday night.
Automatic e-mail replies
- Point your web browser to NCSU WebMail at: http://webmail.ncsu.edu
- Log in using your Unity login ID and password
- In the main message window, click on the "Filters" option on the
top of the page - Click on the "Add a New Rule" button
- Under "Condition", select the "Rule Type" of "All Messages"
- Under "Action", select the "Vacation" option
- The option for "Addresses: Only reply if sent to these addresses:"
is used if you receive email from multiple email addresses (wolf_pack@ncsu.edu
and wfpack@unity.ncsu.edu, for example). You can choose different filters based
on which address the email was sent to. There must be at least one address in
this field. - "Days: Reply message will be resent after " The sieve vacation
message will only be sent to a correspondent once per time interval, no matter
how many emails they send you. That time interval is, by default, 7 days, but
can be extended or shortened with this option. - "Use the following message:" In this field, put the message you
would like to send to correspondents. An example would be "I will be out
of the office from Monday, May 9th, 2005 through Monday, May 16th. If you need
immediate assistance, please contact my supervisor at 919-515-****, or " - Click on "Add New Rule"
Your new messages will now be replied to with your vacation message. Please be sure to disable your vacation message when you return to work or school. Also, if you are on any mailing lists, contact the list administrator for more information on how to disable mail from your list while you are away.
Forward your e-mail automatically
E-mail can be automatically forwarded from your NCSU address to another e-mail address. In order to have your e-mail forwarded, you need to send an e-mail to accounts@ncsu.edu or bae-help@lists.ncsu.edu requesting the complete e-mail address that you would like to have your e-mail sent to. For security reasons, this e-mail needs to be sent from your NCSU e-mail address. Also note that if you are having your e-mail forwarded, you will not be able to access your e-mail from the NCSU account.
