Department Support Services
in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering.
Providing support services for teaching, research and extension.
What we do?
There are a number of services and labs areas within the department to assist students, faculty and staff with engineering projects and research efforts. Several of these services also assist the greater UNC University system and state agencies.
Research Shop
The Research Shop is an on-campus machine shop providing assistance to the department as well as other UNC system university colleges and departments. Students are permitted to use and request projects from the research shop with faculty authorization.
Environmental Analysis Lab
The Environmental Analysis Lab is a waste management & water quality sampling and evaluation service which is used by the department, state agencies, municipalities, and other UNC system university colleges. This is a professional lab area so, students are not permitted to use this lab, however students working on faculty projects may request sample testing form this lab.
Computer Support
Computing is essential to good engineering and the department has a full-time computer system programmer who administers Computer Support for the department. The programmer supports the BAE computer lab, department printers, department web server, and some computing applications. Students may seek assistance for computer lab issues and problems, repair of department issued computers, and help with computer applications or programming with faculty permission.
Graphics Services
The engineering discipline requires communication support in areas like; presentations, printing, web and video. The department has the necessary Graphic Services and equipment to assist students, faculty and staff in developing presentations, using and borrowing multimedia graphic equipment, offer scanner and photo download abilities, provide printing for scientific posters and plots, and to assist with web development issues.
Electronic Shop
The departments Electronic Shop helps with engineering projects that require electronic experience to complete. The department employs a part-time electronics technician to supplement the work of engineering technicians and faculty. Students may ask for project assistance from this shop if they have a faculty request to do so.
Lab Management
There are several technical equipment labs within the department where faculty, staff and students work. These labs are under Lab Management and monitoring. At designated times or by faculty requests area lab managers are available to work with students to assist them with projects .
Engineering Assistance
The department employs a number of staff engineers and engineering technicians to provide Engineering Assistance to faculty. They assist with the implementation of research and extension projects at Weaver Labs and on-site throughout the state. Although it's not the focus of their positions to assist students they do make every effort to help when available.
Bookkeepers
All department purchases are processed through the departments bookkeepers. This department has two bookkeepers one for Research and Teaching purchases and the other for Extension purchases. These bookkeepers have additional assistants. Students working for the department may be instructed to make purchases for projects.
