About the workshop:
The coastal plain, while often sandy, poses a significant challenge to designers of stormwater BMPs: seasonally high water tables (SHWTs). Because of SHWTz, practices such as bioretention and permeable pavement are often unable to be used. In their place, wet ponds and some small-scale practices like above ground water harvesting systems, swales and vegetated filter strips are used. This one-day training will focus on three of these practices, with a special emphasis on wet pond retrofits and rainwater harvesting. How to site, design, and construct each will be the focus of the workshop and NCSU's revised Rainwater Harvester ™ model will be demonstrated and used as part of the class. Participants are asked to bring laptop computers for the model demonstration.
This training is specifically targeted toward designers in Coastal Plain of the Carolinas.
This workshop offers 6 PDHs (professional development hours) for professional engineers and surveyors, authorized by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. Other professionals may appeal to their respective boards to obtain professional education credits. We will provide a certificate of attendance at the conclusion of the workshop.
This workshop is sponsored by: NC State University Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering, NC Cooperative Extension. The training is also co-sponsored by Belle W. Baruch Institute of Coastal Ecology and Forest Science, Clemson University Extension.
