Bioretention Design: "One size doesn't fit all"

December 16, 2011 - Raleigh, NC
McKimmon Conference & Training Center
1101 Gorman St.
Raleigh, NC 27606
REGISTER ONLINE for Dec. 16!

About the workshop:

Overview – Most states employ a “one-size-fits-all” approach to bioretention design, meaning that designers must implement a specific surface area, media depth, and bowl storage for a bioretention cell to receive credit. North Carolina does deviate from these states to some extent by allowing for different design features to be credited more than others depending upon location in the state. The purpose of the workshop is to “smash” the one-size-fits-all approach by demonstrating a tool to oversize (or undersize) bioretention cells from the perspective of underlying soil type, media depth, bowl size and surface area. Field research and modeling are presented to support the idea of “flexible” bioretention design, and a sizing spreadsheet to predict annual runoff conversion (to overflow, drainage, exfiltration, and evapotranspiration) is provided to all attendees. Click here to download the AGENDA.

Note: Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop computer and download in advance the HyPer Model, if possible, but it's not required. Workshop numbers are purposely kept limited to allow for hands-on interaction.

This workshop offers 4 PDHs (professional development hours) for professional engineers and surveyors, authorized by the NC Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. Other professionals may appeal to their respective boards to obtain professional education credits. We will provide a certificate of attendance at the conclusion of the workshop.

This workshop is sponsored by: NC State University Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering and NC Cooperative Extension.

Who Should Attend

  • Engineers
  • Landscape Architects
  • Stormwater Managers
  • Land Surveyors
  • Regulators
  • All others who either design, review, or construct bioretention cells

Participants are asked to bring a laptop, if possible.
