LID 101: Basic Concepts and Applications
9:00am - 12:00pm (Location: TBA)
Presenters: Emily Ayers, Low Impact Development Center; Tom O’Connor, USEPA; Amy Rowe, Rutgers University Cooperative Extension; Ted Brown, Biohabitats, Inc.; Mitch Woodward, North Carolina State Cooperative Extension; and Scott Struck, Tetra Tech
Cost: $20
This workshop will provide participants with a basic understanding of LID approaches and techniques and how these techniques help achieve stormwater management goals and protect water quality and stream health. The workshop will cover impacts of land development on hydrology and water quality; LID objectives and principles; site design measures; and an overview of LID practices, including bioretention/rain gardens (and other landscape-based solutions), pervious paving, green roofs, rainwater harvesting, and more. The workshop will also present examples of applications of LID in the U.S. and abroad and describe how LID is being integrated with stormwater management and permit compliance.
Outline:
- Why Consider Green Infrastructure?
- LID Objectives and Principles
- Water Quality and Quantity Objectives
- Meeting Regulatory Requirements
- Common LID Practices
- Structural
- Non-structural
- Implementation and Performance of LID
- Case Studies
- Inspection and Maintenance
LID 201: Design Guidelines for LID Practices
1:00pm - 4:30pm - (Location: TBA)
Presenters: Scott Struck, Tetra Tech; Ryan Winston, NC State University; Domenic Rocco, PA DEP; Dwayne Jones, NC State Extension; Jason Wright, Tetra Tech; Bill Lord, NC State Extension; Dan Christian, Tetra Tech; Marc Cammarata, Philadelphia Water Department
Cost: $200
The workshop will build on the concepts covered in LID 101 and present more detailed technical considerations for the siting, design, construction, and inspection and maintenance of the most common types of LID practices, including bioretention/rain gardens (and other similar landscape-based solutions), pervious paving, green roofs, rainwater harvesting, and more.
The workshop will include case studies and design examples of how various LID practices have been integrated into development and redevelopment projects as well as retrofit scenarios.
Extensive Green Roof Design for Civil / Stormwater Engineers
9:00am - 12:00pm
Presenters: Elizabeth Fassman and Charlie Miller
Cost: $200
This technical workshop investigates design of extensive green roofs to achieve specific objectives for stormwater mitigation. Delegates will become familiar with the functional aspects of various components of a green roof system, with particular attention to the substrate (growing media) specification, and the role of plants in the roof's hydrologic budget. We will explain what it means to be " FLL compliant" (a common marketing claim from proprietary suppliers), and how to interpret laboratory testing outcomes in terms of field performance for stormwater management. Research from New Zealand, North Carolina, and Oregon are used to evaluate suitability of different approaches for modeling runoff from a green roof: from the Rational formula to TR-55 to continuous simulation using SWMM. The intended audience are civil and environmental engineers or other professionals who are responsible for technical design or approval of stormwater management systems.
Permeable/Pervious Pavement
1:00pm - 4:30pm
Presenters: Bethany Eisenberg and Kelly Collins
Cost: $200
Co-chairs of the ASCE-EWRI Permeable Pavement Task Committee, Bethany Eisenberg and Kelly Collins, joined by other committee members, will summarize the contents and guidance developed by this Task Committee in their recently completed Committee Report. Topics will include: Design considerations common to all systems, porous asphalt design, pervious concrete design, PICP, grid paver systems, avoiding failures, maintenance considerations, testing methods and acceptance checklist.
The intent of the Task Committee's work is for it to be adopted regulating entities as they develop permeable pavement design, construction, and maintenance guidance.
