Running an Analysis
Use this procedure to use the Analysis routine in DRAINMOD.
Tutorial: Performing an Analysis :
1. Launch DRAINMOD.
2. Click the Project Menu Button and choose Open Project.
3. Select any existing project file and click 'Open'. In this example, we choose the DHP project.

4. The Project Window will open and Project Settings in the Navigation Tree will be selected.
If a message box pops up indicating a file is missing, read The Missing File Error tutorial before continuing.

5. Optional. Click the expand button (plus symbol) next to each section in the Navigation Tree. Expand any sub-sections as well. Your tree should look as follows.

In this example we are running a short time period January 1959 - December 1964.
Do not specify a start or end date beyond the boundaries of the project weather files. This will most likely corrupt your PRJ file and cause an error in DRAINMOD interface when you click Simulate.
6. Click Analysis

6. The Analysis window will pop up and will look as follows.

Unless previously changed in an Analysis run, the default System Design and Surface Storage values will be as listed on the System Design Screen.
8. Change the Drain Depth > To value from 100 to 200 cm. Change the Drain Depth > Interval from 10 to 50 cm . Change the Drain Spacing > To value from 2000 to 3000 cm. Your screen should look as below.

8. Click Simulate. This will run the following drainage configuration simulations.
Drain Depth (cm) |
Drain Spacing (cm) |
100 |
2000 |
100 |
3000 |
150 |
2000 |
150 |
3000 |
200 |
2000 |
200 |
3000 |
The black command window will pop up and the model will perform the simulation. Depending on the simulation period, this can occur very fast and you will not be able to read the screen. A screenshot is shown below. Input file locations are specified as the model cycles through the simulation time period.

8. Click Close to close the Analysis window when the simulations have completed.
9. Click the Output > View on the Project Window.

10. The file explorer window will open.

11. Next to File name, choose all files from the drop down box.

12. Double click on the DHP.anl file to view the analysis results.

If you do not see the file extensions, follow the below instructions.
A. Click Start > Control Panel > Folder Options. If you do not see Folder Options, type Folder Options in to the Search box.
B. Under the View tab, uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'.

C. Click OK.
13. The .ANL file will open in Notepad and should look similar to below. Drainage, runoff, and SEW are given in average annual amounts.

If the Hydrologic Analysis of Wetlands option was checked in the Project Settings window, the . ANL file would look as follows.

WETYRS is the number of years meeting the defined wetland criteria / total number of simulation years. For example, if the total number of simulation years was 50 and in 10 years the wetland criteria was satisfied, the value under WETYRS would be 0.20 for that drainage configuration.
