Introduction

What is an internship and why is it important?
An internship is a career-related experience. Internships provide students the chance to experience corporate culture and participate in industrial projects that will expose them to professional research and development practices. Internships increase a student’s contacts with industry and open up more opportunities for post-graduation employment.
“Today’s companies expect new hires to be a seamless organizational fit. This makes hands-on training essential to the development of a successfully engineer.”
Internships typically consist of a 10-12 week, full-time, paid experience during the summer following the junior year. They can, however, be part-time or full-time, during the summer or school year, and they can be paid or unpaid. The particulars of the internship are determined by the employer and the student based on the employer’s needs and the student’s academic responsibilities.
GUIDELINES FOR BECOMING AN INTERN:
Attend an internship workshop at CALS Career Services or the University Career Center. Check out the other workshop offerings also. It is probably a good idea to attend a few of the sessions, especially those that focus on resume writing and interview skills.
- Requirements to be an intern through the Bio&Ag internship Program in MSWord
- Fill out Internship Program Information Sheet in MSWord
- Draft a resume see University Career Center
- Get References: Locate 3 people who will say good things about your work performance to use as references. They should be representative of academic and work experiences. Examples are advisors, supervisors, and teachers. Share your resume with all of your references so they will be better equipped to speak with a prospective employer or write recommendation letters for you. The reference list will typically be shared with the employer at the interview.
Turn in your Internship Program Information Sheet and a copy of your resume to room 110, Weaver Labs and make an appointment to have your resume evaluated. See contact below
