River Course IV

Stream Restoration Project Implementation and Evaluation
October 8-10, 2007
Asheville, NC

Workshop participants will visit 8 stream restoration projects in Western North Carolina, including a project under construction. These projects range from high-gradient headwater streams to large river stabilization and enhancement projects. Participants will learn about implementation and evaluation of channel relocations, floodplain connections, in-stream structures, streambank stabilization, riparian buffer planting, and habitat enhancements. Instructors will demonstrate post-construction field monitoring techniques for morphology, sediment transport, vegetation, and macroinvertebrate assessment. At one project site, a contractor will demonstrate channel grading, structure placement, and bank stabilization. Participants should have training in stream assessment and restoration design.
