| RC 401 | Construction Practices for Stream Restoration | 2 days |
This two day workshop provides practical information and field observation opportunities for contractors and construction oversight personnel involved in stream restoration construction. Participants will learn about stream restoration design concepts, in-stream structures, erosion and sediment control, streambank stabilization, and project bidding. Participants will visit an active, large-scale construction project on Shawneehaw Creek to learn about installation of stream restoration structures, stabilization techniques, and vegetation installation. A tour of the Linville River restoration, constructed in 2008, will also allow participants to see a completed project. Members of the NC Ecosystem Enhancement Program will be on hand to answer questions. An experienced contractor, North State Environmental, will demonstrate construction techniques and answer questions related to equipment, materials, and project management. A variety of construction plans and bid documents will be available for review and discussion. CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION. A one-hour comprehensive examination is provided at the end of class for those who wish to receive a certificate of completion from North Carolina State University. | RC 422 | Coastal Plain Restoration Tour - Implementation & Evaluation | 2 days |
This two day workshop will combine lecture and instruction on coastal restoration with site visits to innovative research and mitigation sites in eastern North Carolina. The focus of this year’s tour will be on the current rules and practice of headwater stream and valley restoration. Participants will learn about implementation and evaluation of channel relocations, floodplain connections, in-stream structures, streambank stabilization, riparian buffer planting, and habitat enhancements. Instruction will focus on the unique aspects and challenges of coastal restoration, including special recommendations for construction activities. Attendees will benefit from having prior training in stream assessment and restoration design. The class will spend a significant part of their day in coastal wetland environments where appropriate field gear such as rubber boots and bug spray will be needed.
