| RC 522 | Coastal Plain Restoration Tour and Evaluation | 2 days |
This two day workshop will involve tours with leading experts to innovative research and mitigation sites. Day 1 will feature visits to restored stream sites on former agricultural fields and a visit to an urban stream restoration site. Day 1 tours are being hosted by the NC Ecosystem Enhancement Program, Environmental Banc and Exchange, and Michael Baker Engineering. Day 2 will include a visit to the North River Farms Restoration Site near Beaufort, NC. Restoration at this site has been directed by the North Carolina Coastal Federation, University researchers, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and by private mitigation groups. Field discussions will be focused on practical lessons learned and on how to address specific challenges of coastal restoration projects. Attendees will leave with hands-on field knowledge and benefit from direct interaction with designers and researchers. Our group will convene at the Onslow county cooperative extension office. Participants will receive some introduction to the sites we will visit. We will carpool as much as possible to our first set of stream restoration sites. After lunch on your own, we will meet at our final afternoon site visit. The second day will be spent entirely in the field touring the North River Farms site. We will meet at the farm to begin Day 2. Attendees can sign up for one or two days of the tour. All attendees will spend a significant part of their day in coastal wetland environments where appropriate field gear such as rubber boots and bug spray will be needed. Participants will also be responsible for their own transportation and meals. Transportation around and to the field sites can be coordinated with carpools. There will be time to stop at a restaurant for Lunch on Day 1. Day 2 lunch will be in the field. Some snacks and water will be provided. Lead Instructor: Kris Bass, PE Registration Fee: $25 per day, or $50 for the full 2-day workshop (lunch not provided) Click here for a map
