Contentnea Creek Tributary Restoration
Farmville, Pitt County, NC
585 feet of an un-named tributary to Little Contentnea Creek located at Farmville Country Club was restored. The existing confined channel was 15-20 ft wide with a buffer of maintained lawn up to the water's edge. The restoration involved excavating a 30' to 50' wide floodplain wetland and the stream was re-meandered through the newly created floodplain area. 1200 cubic yards of soil were excavated in order to create the new floodplain area. An existing narrow culvert was removed at the downstream end of Braswell Branch and replaced by a wooden cart bridge. In addition, two 20' long 24-inch diameter floodplain pipes were added adjacent to a second existing 48" culvert to reduce localized erosion and sedimentation problems and to provide a more seamless discharge of water flow from the newly created floodplain area. The stream restoration resulted in the creation of 15,000 square feet (0.34 acres) of floodplain area. Shallow land wetland plants were planted on the floodplain and streambanks of the restored channel. In addition, a 10,000 square foot wetland was created on the golf course to capture and treat golf course runoff before entering the creek.
