Shawneehaw Creek runs through the Town of Banner Elk in Avery County, NC. The restoration reach is located in the park behind Town Hall. The stream was degraded due to lack of riparian vegetation and the in-stream habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms was impaired. The restoration included stabilizing eroding streambanks, increasing pool habitat, and riparian planting. Phase I of the project was completed in June of 2000, and the planting occurred in March of 2001. Vegetation included alders, doghobble, hibiscus, willow, yellowroot, river birch, and other species. Phase II was completed in May of 2001.
