| DUTCH AND CLARK CREEKS This project is located on the Taylor Farm in Valle Crucis, North Carolina. This farm has been in operation for at least 60 years and the streams running through this property have been impacted through relocation, lack of riparian buffer and cattle access. In cooperation with the local NRCS office, NC SRI completed a restoration project on this farm in May 2001 On Clark Creek, a tributary to Dutch Creek, a bankfull bench was created to help alleviate bank erosion. In-stream structures were installed to create more pool habitat and dissipate energy in the channel which had previously been straightened. The cattle were fenced out 35 feet from the top of bank and the riparian area will be replanted this fall. Dutch Creek had also undergone relocation in the past and was experiencing some bank erosion and degraded habitat. In-stream structure were used to increase habitat, and increase stability around the meander bends until vegetation mature. Sections of the channel and stream banks were adjusted to stabilize the pattern adjustments that were taking place. This stream was also fenced to keep out the cattle and will be vegetated this fall. NRCS Cost-Share porgram provided for the fencing, stream crossings, watering tanks, and heavy-use areas. This cooperation will help make this project a success by decreasing the imapcts of the cattle on the streambanks and water quality. This project was funded by the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund and EPA 319 funds. |
