MITCHELL RIVER WATERSHED The goals of the project
in the Mitchell River watershed are to permanently protect the headwater areas and
riparian buffers. To reach this goal the project has consisted of educational and
technical assistance through the use of state, federal and county programs along with
additional resources. The projects components include; streambank restoration and
installation of BMPs to improve water quality and aquatic habitat, long-term
physical and biological monitoring, and the development of tools for evaluating the
projects success.
- Surry Soil and Water Conservation District:
Initiated this project with the commitment of the North Carolina Agriculture Cost Share
Program funds to the Mitchell River watershed. SS&WCD are providing
on-the-ground technical assistance through the District Technician position.
- Natural Resources Conservation Service:
Supporting the use of existing federal cost share programs, which include the
Environmental Quality Incentive Program, Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program, Conservation
Reserve Program and Wetland Restoration Program. NRCS is providing on-the-ground
technical and educational assistance to the landowners in the watershed.
- Pilot View RC&D, Inc. : Helped to organize
the initial meetings and continue to support the project by securing and administering
funding for several project components.
- Duke Power: Conducting a multi-year suspended sediment
study in the watershed.
- North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service (NCCES):
Providing technical and educational assistance from local and state level by
securing an EPA 319 grant for project design and management along with education,
