Draw Them a Picture: Turning Data into Information for Public Audiences

Description: Water quality data. Pollutant concentrations. Monitoring results. Flow. Baseline information. Discharge rates. These data, once analyzed, can say a lot about water resources and help guide decision making, but only if your audience can understand it. Both technical and non-technical audiences need analyzed data translated into usable, credible and reliable information. Information presented in easy-to-understand formats will attract attention, more effectively convey your message and have greater impact.

Through this workshop, you'll begin to see your analyzed data from the audience point of view and gain skills to help you turn data into information. You'll understand the importance of seeing information within your analyzed data, determine the level of detail appropriate for your audience, learn how to package the information and review examples of good and bad information presentations. This is not data analysis; this is information presentation. You will learn how to prepare, package and deliver information so that your audience will listen, understand and respond to what you have to say. Working with an example case study, you'll work on developing your own informational tools best suited to your organization and your audiences.

Draw Them a Picture is offered by the Conservation Technology Information Center, a national not-for-profit dedicated to environmentally responsible and economically viable decision making for watersheds and agriculture.
