Low Impact Development Workshop:
Protecting Water Quality as Pittsboro Grows

December 7, 2006

Central Carolina Community College
Chatham County Campus
Pittsboro, NC
9am - 3pm

About the Workshop

Pittsboro’s rural character and close proximity to the Research Triangle area has led to an explosion of interest by developers in new residential and commercial growth. Balancing the need for growth with protection of water resources presents real challenges for Pittsboro and Chatham County. Developers, local governments, water resource professionals, land use planners and many others are faced with tough water quality and quantity decisions. Impaired water quality in the Robeson Creek Watershed as well as a voluntary building moratorium in Pittsboro highlight the need for innovative solutions. Low Impact Development (LID), an alternative to traditional development that provides economic and environmental benefits, can help meet these challenges.

How Can LID Help You?

• Assist in meeting new stormwater requirements
• Reduce construction and maintenance costs of stormwater infrastructure
• Balance growth needs with water quality protection
• Create “green landscapes” that add amenity value to new development

Workshop Topics:

• Stormwater regulations affecting Pittsboro
• LID site analysis
• LID site plan design
• LID stormwater best management practices
• LID hydrologic analysis, implementation and case studies
• Conservation easements
• Reviewing local codes and ordinances for barriers to LID
• Sediment and erosion control during construction
• Integrating on-site stormwater and wastewater systems
• Open discussion on local challenges and opportunities for LID
