Erosion & Sediment Control in the Mountains

Description:

• This workshop will address local challenges and present solutions to improve water quality by using sediment and erosion control measures in the mountains. An overview of the Sediment Pollution Control act of 1973 will be given, followed by a more in-depth discussion of how to comply.

• Topics include: detailed sediment and erosion control measures, how to control sediment and erosion while working in or near a stream, ground cover considerations, and erosion control considerations.

• The NC Division of Land Quality’s Green Dozer modules, developed by Dr. Rich McLaughlin of NC State University, will be used.

Primary Instructor

Dr. Rich McLaughlin is an Associate Professor and Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University, Soil Science Department. Rich joined the faculty at NC State in 1993, where his focus is on erosion, sediment, and turbidity control. Rich led the effort to establish the Sediment and Erosion Control Research and Education Facility (SECREF) at the Lake Wheeler Road Field Laboratory, where he conducts much of his research. Rich's current focus is on the use of polyacrylamide in systems to reduce sediment and turbidity problems on construction sites.

Professional Landscape Architect - (Application submitted for 5 PDHs)

Note: Professionals seeking credits must attend the entire workshop; certificates will be awarded after completion.

Who Should Attend

Registration Fee and Payment Information:

$60 per person (no PDHs) - includes boxed lunch, refreshments and workshop materials
$150 for professionals seeking professional development hours (PDHs)

***NOTE*** Macon County Board of Commissioners and Jackson County Board of Commissioners are offering full scholarships to Macon County and Jackson County residents who register and attend the entire workshop. We ask that you please register online.
