Eutrophication
The slow, natural nutrient enrichment of streams and lakes responsible for “aging” ponds, lakes, and reservoirs.
Excessive amounts of nutrients from point source and nonpoint source pollution speed up the process.
Usually associated with algae growth.
As algae grow and then decompose, they deplete the dissolved oxygen in slow moving water, which can result in fish kills.
