CAFO's Final Rule
for
Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations
December 15, 2003 In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture decided to adopt a Unified
National Strategy aimed at addressing water quality problems associated
with animal feeding operations (AFOs). The EPA announced the CAFO Final
Rule on 15 December 2002. At the time of its announcement, the Final Rule
was expected to affect 15,500 livestock and poultry operations throughout
the U.S. The Final Rule updates regulations that are more than 25 years
old and will result in a more effective, nationally consistent set of regulations
to protect water resources.
