Carolina 4-H Presentation Guidelines
Small Engines
Purpose/Objectives:
To learn the basic operating principles of the internal combustion engine.
To learn the use of the service manuals, correct tools and safe working
habits for engine disassembly and assembly.
To learn how to maintain two stroke and four stroke cycle engines.
Eligibility:
Individual or teams may compete .
Junior and Senior (9 - 19) compete in the same category.

Equipment needed for overhauling a small engine
Resources:
Small engine dealers, such as, John Deere, Exmark, Briggs and Stratton,
Kawasaki, etc. Small engine business Tractor Dealerships Lawn and garden
centers Libraries Community Colleges Internet locations for small engines
Rules/Regulations:
Participants in the Small Engines Presentation will be required to do
the following:

A written test with questions on small engines
-
Identification of small engine parts, and
-
A demonstration on some aspect of the small engine.
A copy of an old
test and a complete parts
list is attached for your ease of use. It is the responsibility of
the participant to come prepared to take all three parts of this contest.
Questions are taken from small engine service manuals and other current
literature available from small engine dealers. These questions are designed
to determine the participants knowledge of maintenance, operation and principles
of small engines.

Suggestions/Helpful Hints:
1.) Use good visuals. 2.) Know the parts and principles associated
with your specific topic 3.) Be prepared to answer technical questions.
4.) Safety should be used when working with small engine presentations.
Judging:
1. Judges will review each presentation and complete a judge's score
sheet.
2. Judges will use their own discretion as to whether questions will
or will not be asked.
3. Judges decisions will be final.
