Developed a statewide Extension program on solid waste management. Implemented an educational and technical assistance program to increase awareness and understanding of solid waste management issues. Created educational materials and provided training for extension educators and community leaders. Conducted waste assessments and evaluated potential waste reduction program enhancements. Created an international vermicomposting resource center with web pages, written and audiovisual materials, research, and training.  Developed a Compost Training Facility that features an extensive variety of on-site composting and vermicomposting systems, demonstrations of the beneficial reuse of compost, and hands-on training.

Have delivered more than 400 presentations at conferences and workshops on various solid waste management topics including source reduction, composting, vermicomposting, and recycling (see Proceedings/Invited Papers for a sample of presentations). Taught nine source reduction sections of The State of North Carolina's Recycling Coordinator's Training Course, 1991-1994. Conducted numerous workshops and training courses nationwide.

Co-produced weekly television cable access program Environmental Update. Co-created, researched, wrote, and identified speakers for monthly live call-in show on environmental topics including recycling, landfills, water pollution, and pesticides. Served as occasional moderator and guest speaker. 7/89-2/90.
