Waste water irrigation
-
Overview: Best Management Practices to minimize the migration of waste
constituents applied through irrigation are being evaluated.
-
Goal: Develop irrigation guidelines and management standards to minimize
the off-site impacts of wastewater irrigation.
-
Wastewater irrigation is a common terminal treatment practice for liquid
municipal, industrial and agricultural waste. Management guidelines established
for freshwater irrigation are often not relevant for wastewater irrigation.
Field and lysimeter studies are underway to evaluate the influence of irrigation
scheduling methods, system calibration, and other practices such as controlled
drainage and vegetative field borders on surface and shallow ground water
quality.
