AREAS IN WHICH
RESEARCH IS CONDUCTED
Dr. Beasley's current research interests flow from and are a
broadening of his earlier work at
…investigating processes and emissions
of various pollutants (gaseous and particulate) from confined animal production
systems.
...studying and simulating the mechanisms of pollutant
movement (sediment and chemicals) in agricultural ecosystems. As the developer of the ANSWERS water quality
model, which is used throughout the world, Dr. Beasley has helped better
understand and plan for improvements in water and natural resource systems.
...utilizing deterministic modeling technology combined with
remote sensing techniques and geographic information systems (GIS) to make
better and faster estimates of nonpoint source pollution yields from areas
ranging from the size of fields to river basins.
...evaluating interactions between soil
erosion and soil productivity.
...investigating the use of advanced
computer systems and data manipulation techniques to better transfer the
technology that is being developed.
GRANTS, CONTRACTS,
AND GIFTS RECEIVED
Dr. Beasley has, through the years, been successful in
attracting extramural funding for his research program. USEPA and USDA funding provided much of the
support needed to develop the original version of the ANSWERS model. Other innovations in water quality monitoring
and modeling have also resulted from grant funding. An "expert system" version of the
WEPP model, new chemical and nutrient movement relationships for the CREAMS and
GLEAMS models, hypermedia and GIS-oriented decision support systems for
analyzing and treating groundwater problems are some of the outputs of these
projects.
EDITORSHIP OR
EDITORIAL BOARDS
Dr. Beasley served as a member and
chairman of ASAE's P-513 committee, which is the editorial board for Resource magazine (1993-2000).
Dr.
Beasley served as Associate Editor of Transactions
of the ASAE (1978-1982) in the area of Hydrology.

RESIDENT
INSTRUCTION AND CONTINUING EDUCATION
Currently, Dr. Beasley is teaching BAE 471 "Land
Resources Environmental Engineering."
This course is the foundation course for the environmental emphasis
within the Biological Engineering program.
Dr. Beasley team taught (with Dr. Gary Roberson) "Agricultural
Health and Safety" -- BAE 432 at NC State in 1999 and 2000. Dr. Beasley taught graduate and undergraduate
courses (in the environmental and instrumentation areas) when he was associated
with the
Dr. Beasley has been heavily involved in departmental
administration and program assessment since the late 1980's. He was Department Head at two institutions (
PUBLIC SERVICE
During part of Dr. Beasley's tenure at Purdue (1983-1988),
25 to 40 percent of his time was budgeted to extension funds with the
responsibility of working with public sector agencies and engineers concerned
with water quality. The major aspect of
his effort concerned a technology transfer program to enable the new analytical
tools developed through his and others' research to be adapted for planning and
engineering design of nonpoint source pollution abatement projects. This effort
was accelerated by the successful pursuit of outside competitive funds.
Currently, he is developing a similar program at NC State. He has also been involved with technology
assessment as part of the Smithfield Foods funded effort to develop and
implement alternative animal waste management and treatment technologies.
