Biographical Sketch

Ronald E. Sneed earned his B. S. in 1959 and PHD in 1971 from the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at NC State University. He began his career here, then moved to Oklahoma State University and returned again to this department where he was an extension assistant professor in the area of irrigation. He worked on soil problems with field studies on the irrigation of corn, cotton and peanuts. He expanded his activities into studies of sprinkler irrigation on fruit and vegetable crops and worked on drainage controls.

Sneed worked with Dr Sowell to explore the efficiency of water utilization by crops; they developed two computer based models -- one to project crop water requirements and another to determine the optimal water use from a specific quantity of water available. Department computing in those days was a terminal connection to the then Triangle Universities Computation Center. Sneed was naturally a member of the department’s computer committee.

Sneed's work had a significant effect on the number of acres of irrigated crops in N. C.. He is well respected and recognized in the field of irrigation serving on the North Carolina Irrigation Society and as its president. Dr. Sneed and his wife established the Ronald. E. Sneed NC Irrigation Society Undergraduate Endowed Scholarship of which many graduates students are thankful for.
