Lingjuan Wang-Li named a 2015-16 University Faculty Scholar
Lingjuan Wang Li, Associate Professor, was named one of the 2015-2016 University Faculty Scholars. This is the fourth group of university scholars to be named. These scholars are considered high-performing faculty members recognized for their significant achievements in scholarship, teaching and service. Dr. Ling works in the area of agricultural air quality.
The honor is accompanied by an annual cash supplement for the next 5 years to support her program.
Dr. Wenqiao (Wayne) Yuan receives ASABE Best Paper Award for 2015
Dr. Wenqiao (Wayne) Yuan is the recipient of the 2015 Best Paper Award presented at the Annual International Meeting of the American Society of Biological and Agricultural Engineers held in New Orleans, Louisiana. The paper is titled A char supported nano-NiO catalyst for biomass syngas cleanup and conditioning.
Syngas, is a fuel mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Syngas can be produced from many sources. Dr. Yuan research involved biomass gasification and exploring reduction of impurities such as tars from syngas mixtures. Impurities have been a significant impediment to the use of syngas in commercial applications.
A newly developed nano-NiO on char catalyst was evaluated for syngas cleanup and conditioning in an updraft biomass gasifier. The nano-Ni/char catalyst was prepared by mechanically mixing nano-sized NiO powder with char particles. Its performance in terms of tar removal and syngas composition enhancement was compared with Ni/char and Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalysts under various reforming conditions. The nano-Ni/char catalyst removed more than 99% of tars in the syngas, exhibiting similar or better catalytic performance than Ni/γ-Al2O3 at the same conditions, especially at relatively low temperatures, smaller NiO loadings, or shorter residence times. Its performance was also better than Ni/char catalyst in all cases. Meanwhile, the nano-Ni/char catalyst also enhanced H2 and CO concentrations in syngas, up to 36.73 vol% and 29.52 vol%, respectively. Furthermore, the nano-Ni/char catalyst did not deteriorate during the 8 h continuous durability test.

Dr. William Hunt Appointed a 2015 William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor
About the Appointment
Since the first class of recipients in 1951, the appointment as a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor has been recognized as the highest honor open to faculty members in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
William Neal Reynolds established the endowment creating the distinguished professorships in 1950 through the contribution of 10,000 shares of class B stock in the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. The Reynold's gift is one of the greatest single programs to come to the college. The endowment enables the college to retain and attract prominent scientists. The endowment is designed to strengthen teaching, research and extension programs in the various fields of agriculture and to lift rural living standards in North Carolina.
The William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professorships are intended to recognize tenure-track faculty who are “great scholars, great teachers, great scientists and great interpreters,” having distinguished themselves in any area of research, teaching and/or extension in agriculture and/or the life sciences.
Hunt joins Dr. Wayne Skaggs who received this distinction in 1984. Hunts appointment will begin June 1, 2015.
Dr. Andrew Hale Receives the 2015 College of Engineering "George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award"
Dr. Andrew Hale has been the undergraduate coordinator in the department since January 2004. He has advised over 600 students to date navigating them through the engineering program to assure their timely graduation. This is the second time that Dr. Hale has received this award. He also received it in 2009. The department's enrollment of undergraduates has steadily grown through these years and good advising plays a role in this growth. Dr. Hale also finds time to teach three courses the Introduction to Biological Engineering, Properties of Biological Engineering materials and Instrumentation for Biological Systems.
About the Award
"George H. Blessis Outstanding Undergraduate Advisor Award" is given by the College of Engineering and honors engineering faculty members who consistently and willingly give their time and effort to advising, counseling and mentoring students and assisting student groups. The award is also a continuing memorial to George Blessis, a faculty member whose interest in undergraduate education and advising serves as an example for others to follow.
Dr. Rodney Huffman Received the Outstanding BAE Professor Award"
Dr. Rod Huffman, P.E. received the 2014-2015 Outstanding BAE Professor Award. This award is given by Bio & Ag students in recognition of the special effort of a professor in the department. This is the second time Dr. Huffman has received this award from students. Dr. Huffman was recognized for his commitment to teaching students. Dr. Huffman also has the distinction of teaching more courses in the department than any other professor. He has been teaching t since 1989 and bringing a wealth of knowledge to future engineers. The award was presented at the 2014 Bio & Ag spring banquet.
