Facilities and Support

(For new graduate student orientation)
August 31,2008

Normal Office Hours

8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Access to the Building

The entrance doors of the building are unlocked during normal office hours as are most classroom and laboratory spaces.  Your office space has been assigned and you have been given instructions on obtaining a key for the office.  That key will open any of the glass entrance doors so that you may have after-hours access to any unlocked areas in the building and your office.  Access to other locked spaces is provided based on the nature of your research and/or teaching activity, and you should request keys from the departmental administrative assistant (Ms. Maness, Rm 100) with the approval of your major professor (for research lab and support facility access), Dr. Andy Hale (for access to classroom spaces where you have any teaching or assisting responsibility), or Dr. Robert Evans.

When using the facilities after-hours, please be aware of your responsibility to leave entrance doors locked upon entering and leaving and to leave any other areas which you unlock secure upon leaving.

Phones

Currently, two phones are identified as primarily for graduate student use.  They are located adjacent to Rm 133 (515-6804) and just inside the door to lab 134-A (515-6803).  Long distance calls are not permitted, except by credit card.  These phones are set up to ring until answered.

Mail

The incoming mail will be sorted (around 1:30) and distributed it to your individual mailbox, which you will find in the hallway leading to the drink machine.   Please be aware that the mail service is intended to support your PROFESSIONAL activities; you should make other arrangements for your personal mail.

Computer Access

By virtue of your enrollment as a student in the department, and of your payment of the engineering computer fee, you have an account on the Eos system.  This system is a distributed computing system with workstations running Unix and Windows/NT located throughout engineering departments.  Rm 122 (accessible after hours by combination lock) houses the local Eos workstations.  Your Login id is made up of your first two initials and the first six characters of your last name (John T. Jones = jtjones; note lower case), and your initial password is your student id (social security) number.  The system is self-documenting and user-friendly.  You are permitted to use the system for any professional purpose associated with your program of study and work at NCSU.  Your email address on this system is <loginid>@eos.ncsu.edu (jtjones@eos.ncsu.edu).

In addition, the department maintains two workstation labs: a Windows lab located in 144 Weaver Labs and a Windows lab located in 1105 Grinnells. All department network printers are accessible by graduate students from either 144 Weaver or 1105 Grinnells. The public graduate student printer name is ps175, located in Weaver lab 134A.  The department supports the mail alias gradstud@bae.ncsu.edu  for all graduate students . All notices, announcements, etc., to graduate students from the Director of Graduate Programs and/or the Department Head are sent to this address.

Technical support is available by contacting Ms. Sherry Li (xli@unity.ncsu.edu) in Rm 135-E.  Please be aware that Ms. Li is responsible for general support of the entire system, so you should not expect immediate response except in cases in which general system problems are apparent.  Also, she is not available for tutoring on the use of the system or any of the software.

Secretarial Assistance

Ms. Kristel Page (Rm 189 - kjpage@unity.ncsu.edu) currently has responsibility for assisting faculty and technical staff in the larger (laboratory/classroom) building.  You should NOT expect her to perform routine secretarial duties for you.  However, she will be able to offer you advice and guidance in that regard.  You will find getting to know and work with her helpful.

Research and Electronics Shops

The department is fortunate to have ably staffed research and electronics shops.  The research shop is managed by Mr. David Buffaloe (Rm 130 - buffaloe@unity.ncsu.edu).  The shop operates on a work order basis, and any fabrication jobs should be requested through your major professor.

General Building Problems

Problems encountered with the building, such as malfunctions of doors, lighting, or HVAC systems should be reported to Mr. David Buffaloe (Rm 130) immediately.

Departmental Vehicles

The department maintains a fleet of cars and trucks for use by all faculty, staff, graduate students, and part-time employees.  You should check with Mr. David Buffaloe (Rm 130) for details on reserving and using departmental research vehicles. The checkout and return are from Rm 130 (the Research Shop). If your advisor is an Extension faculty member, you may also be able to access the extension vehicle fleet. Contact Dr. Tom Losordo for the rules and procedures for using those vehicles.
