Using Web Forms at NCSU

BAE Software and Supplies

The new trend in web site design is to provide tools for the average person to create pages which become part of a web community (Google sites, My space, YouTube) or business/gov. web sites which include applications to add to pages. In the future more large sites will put in place generic web tool-interfaces that will enable the average person to add pages to a web site or update existing web pages. People will do it using new user-friendly web portals and little or no knowledge of how the site operates. The big WEB entities like Goggle, Yahoo, MSN etc. and browsers Explorer, and Mozilla etc. are all developing tools and bundles which aim to enrich peoples two-way web communications and it will soon revolutionizes the way the web currently operates (communicates).

The need for accessible design of web pages has already changed the way things are done on the web. Many of us have learned to make a simple web page but these pages are often not accessible to the disabled. New standards of web design have changed how we think about creating web pages. Today CSS (cascading style sheets) are utilized. CSS is a separate instruction page(s) that's called up by a server to tell the browser how to render your page in new XML strict or transitional language as opposed to plain html. These changes provide a truly rich web experience for everyone surfing a site abled or disabled.

Creating XML strict and compliant pages requires new knowledge and new improved software like Dreamweaver CSS, programming and database integration. There's currently a considerable learning curve and an investment in time required to get started with site-wide templates and tool-heavy web page creation. Today, teams of graphic and web developers are producing large business and government sites to be compliant, compact, and to establish a working base for adding new two-way communication tools of the near future.

Currently, the university, colleges and departments are all working to establish accessibly compliant, user friendly, and easy to update web pages. All entities are researching, testing, and immersed in the steeped learning curve to work out the best and fastest ways to get it all up on the web.

The Future of the Web

The future of the web is about merging and organizing all types of daily on-line tasks like the ones above into centralized web portals in areas like education, shopping, office functional workspaces, and news/social/play spaces. Successful portals will be easy to use and navigate but not to overwhelming for user. They will provide safe and secure experiences, be easily accessible through desktop taskbars, internet toolbars, software add-ins and things yet to come. However, most importantly portals should meet the personal goals of people as it pertains uniquely to their business, social, and educational needs.

Right now there are many players/entities and lots of open source development going on (hence more web nuttiness). Web businesses are offering an array of task oriented tools example: www.google.com/intl/ en/options/ networking opportunities example:www.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=
userTour.home, meeting educational needs http://drupal.org/, office functionality Microsoft www.openoffice.org/. There will be plenty of merging of efforts so watch as big fish gobble up little fish and vice-a-versa.

Sites to watch...

Watch the developments at all of the sites below looking at their new tools, mini-app's, browser toolbars and how they combine tools together, present them to the public and develop communities of users. Watch... Microsoft =IE /www.microsoft.com/windows/possibilities/, Mozilla= Foxfire www.mozilla.com/ and Seamonkey www.seamonkey-project.org/, Apple=Safari www.apple.com/safari/, Google= google aps www.google.com/intl/en/options/ www.google.com/chrome/), Telenor telecom =Opera www.opera.com/discover/ , yahoo http://yahoo.com/, msn.com http://msn.com/, bing www.bing.com/, ebay http://ebay.com/, youtube http://youtube.com/, amazon http://amazon.com/, wikepedia http://wikipedia.org/, myspace.com www.myspace.com/, aol http://aol.com/, facebook www.facebook.com/ (http://developers.facebook.com/opensource.php) Open source app's are hot right now with lots of players - the web may be quite different when all the dust settles.

How can the web serve you...

Web Page Publishing:

  1. For information about templates and accessible design see NCSU DELTA web site. If you have a department web project that you need help with designing please call Bio&Ag Graphics at 515-6769. A New Office of Information Technology (OIT) will soon host all university communication information in the future. Below are some resources for templates. At this junction in time it is recommend to use MS Word (well formatted) along with Course Genie (an add-on for MS Word which produces clean basic XML compliant pages). Course Genie is taught on campus at OIT.
  2. Learning to make a simple web page is still an invaluable skill for the person who wants to learn from the bottom up - I have provided a page to help you - web page basics.
  3. For optional ways for making web pages try bogging and social networking sites and learn to use their tools/wizard systems. My recommendation is to use Google-sites= www.google.com/sites which provides options for creating sets of pages. When you are done link your site to a NCSU page or ask me to link it for you.

Publications & Collaborations - The internet has some new ways of collaborating with others on projects especially if you are writing publications with people who may not be local. Check out internet Self-Publishing tools, Collaboration Spaces and Wiki.

General Warning Note: If you choose to store NCSU information on a public off-site web server you should be careful and read the site agreement that you enter into to prevent copyright infringements. Choose a reliable company and don't forget to make a second NCSU employee aware of the site giving them access/permission to the hosted servers site folder.

Storing & Sharing Photos see: Gallery page ways to store and organize photos

Phone from your computer - Make free computer based phone calls. There are two ways to make internet phone calls computer to computer and computer to phone. The ability to do this ('VOIP' or Voice Over Internet Protocol) has been around awhile (I used it myself in the early 1990's) however, the poor clarity/words dropped made it not a viable daily option. Things have changed--quality has improved and calls are free or reasonable (at least for now) so hook-up your microphone and speakers and download the free software below. Also see VOIP at NC State. Additionally, faxing can be done from your computer aldo see: Fax Site Reviews http://www.internet-faxes.net/compare.php

About Print Publishing

Photo: shows brochures and phamphlets displayed NCSU graphic instructions NCSU Brand

Publications are subject to NCSU Printing Rules and Policies (see right panel). There are also rules for graphic identy in the(Do not take on a printing job without following proper procedures). BAE graphics can help you design and/or estimate large printing projects 515-6769. Publications today can be made ready for both print and the web at the same time. This is done with In-Design software an upgrade from publishing programs like Pagemaker, Word, Publisher, etc.

NCSU Printing Rules:

PDF's - Converting files to PDF is a powerful way to make printed materials available on the web. Downloading the free Acrobat Reader form the web is easy howerver, Acrobat WRITER is used to make a PDF file. The free Acrobat Reader does not make PDF files it will only reads them. The web offers sites where you can write PDF Files for free on a trial basis before you become a paying member. You can also use freeware or download PDFfactory http://www.softwarelabs.com/pdf/pdffactory.htm (see BAE computer support Sherry Li for the PDFfactory download).

What's handy about choosing to use Acrobat PDF writer software is that it will automatically install a pdf option icon directly to the menu area of many popular software packages - microsoft and adobe products. Note again: The free Acrobat Reader will not make a PDF file only read them. You can get the Writer part of Acrobat (called distiller) bundled with the reader in Acrobat Professional http://www.adobe.com/products/ or purchase as a stand alone option http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?
platform=Windows&product=9.

White Papers & Manuscripts - A well formatted Word document is best for these types of publications. See NCSU EDT site for help with formatting files.

Posting Publications on NCSU Web Pages

Scholarly Publications - The library posts these types of publications.

Extension Publications - In this department publications are produced at CALS Communication Services. These publication become a part of the CES Extension Publication Database and are issued a specific publication number. Your final PDF publications are then located and posted to BAE's web site. This can be done by either BAE Graphics or post it yourself to a TOPIC folder site you establish on BAE web site. In order for the PDF publication to be linked to BAE's extension publication page and to CES_CALS Online Publications Catalog you must notify BAE Graphics and CES/CAL's of the posted publications web address. Once initially posted you may manage new and older publications yourself or ask BAE Graphics to do it for you.

Managing Publications:

Each Extension publication has associated information with it like the list of authors, key search words and a brief description about the publication which is posted to the database. To manage and edit this information see: CES_CALS Online Publications Catalog or you can have BAE Graphics manage you publications for you. If you choose to manage your own publications you should know that if you ever move your web posted publication into a new web locker, folder, site, etc. you are responsible for changing all the associated links in the CES_CALS Online Publications Catalog and notify BAE Graphics of any change.

Note: Non-university page links are provided as a starting point for information on the subject but are in no way an endorsement of linked sites or the accuracy of the information they present.
