| RC 401 | Construction Practices for Stream Restoration | 2 days |
This two-day workshop provides practical information and field observation opportunities for contractors and construction oversight personnel involved in stream restoration construction. Participants will learn about stream channel and floodplain design concepts, in-stream structures, erosion and sediment control on stream project sites, streambank stabilization and streamside vegetation installation. Participants will visit an active stream construction project on the Dupont State Forest to observe stream channel and floodplain grading, construction stakeout and survey, structure layout, and rock/log structures bioengineering and erosion control measures being installed. The class will also visit several other completed stream restoration projects to observe several structures and streambank stabilization techniques. An experienced contractor, North State Environmental, will demonstrate construction techniques and answer questions related to equipment, materials, and project management. A variety of construction plans and bid documents will be available for review and discussion. Please click here for more information. This class has an optional one-hour comprehensive examination at the end of class for those who wish to receive a certificate of completion from North Carolina State University. This one-day course will introduce students to management considerations and techniques used in controlling invasive and exotic vegetation in the riparian setting. This course is focused on riparian areas in the Southeast. Classroom topics will include identification of common invasive and exotic plants, ecological considerations, assessment and pricing, and tools of the trade.
