Demonstration of the Topcon 3D GPS Machine Control System
August 24, 2007 - 10:00am to 12 noon. Rain or shine.
NC State University’s BAE Department in cooperation with the Division of Forest Resources is hosting a contractor demonstration of the Topcon 3D GPS Machine Control System for stream restoration construction. This is a free event.
The Topcon 3D GPS Machine Control System allows the equipment operator to, within centimeters, locate the bucket/blade in real time relative to the 3D CAD drawing. This type of instant feedback enables construction that more accurately reflects the design plan, reduces the need for repetitive field stakeouts and surveys, creates the as-built data as it is being built, and generally provides a faster, more cost effective construction process. Attendees will be able to see the equipment working with the Topcon 3D GPS Machine Control System on a stream restoration project. Contractor and designer representatives will be on hand to answer any questions attendees may have.
Other points of interest will be the Phase I Restoration (completed in 2006), an ongoing wetland restoration, extensive revegetation efforts and other innovative restoration techniques.
Project Background: This demonstration will be held in conjunction with the Phase II restoration of Purlear Creek at Rendezvous Educational State Forest, a 2,000 foot stream restoration. This project consists of approximately 1,400 feet of bank enhancement and 600 feet of new channel (Priority I) construction. In addition to bank grading and channel realignment, both log and stone structures will be utilized to stabilize and improve the stream habitat. Native vegetation will be planted along the channel banks and along the stream buffer to further improve the aquatic and terrestrial habitat. The ultimate goal of this project is to restore the trout supporting status this stream had in the early 20th century prior to extensive logging and years of agriculture.
Location: The Phase II reach of Purlear Creek on the Rendezvous Mountain Educational State Forest located near Wilkesboro, NC.
