Short-Term Management Plan for Craven County

Prepared by: Frank J. Humenik

Long-Term Objectives

1. Develop a short-term wastewater management plan for Craven County.

2. Conduct an educational program to provide information and input to the wastewater management plan developed.

3. Conduct a consensus building process so that the wastewater management plan is accepted.

Short-Term Objectives

1. Establish a Craven County Wastewater Management Advisory Committee.

2. Review current status of water quality and wastewater management in Craven County.

3. Set basis for developing a short-term wastewater management plan for Craven County.

Accomplishments

1. A Wastewater Management Advisory Committee has been formed and meets monthly.

2. An educational sub-committee of the Wastewater Management Advisory Committee has been formed.

3. Water quality and wastewater management information from Craven County has been presented, and wastewater management plans are being evaluated.

Significance of Accomplishments

Experience with the failure of the first county-wide solid waste management plan because of public resistance emphasizes the necessity of having a collaborative consensus-building process for the development of the required short-term wastewater management plan. Involvement of Extension in the development of the wastewater management plan facilitates emphasis on current recommended practices such as land application of wastes, adoption of permitted wastewater reuse strategies and water conservation techniques.

Future Plans

1. Continue to work with the Waste Management Advisory Committee to develop a cooperative consensus for development and county-wide acceptance of a short-term wastewater management plan for Craven County.

2. Help implement new techniques for land application of waste, wastewater reuse and water conservation.
