USDA Hydrologic Unit Project

Prepared by: Frank J. Humenik

Long-Term Objectives

1. Implementation of BMPs that will protect and enhance surface and ground water quality in the Goshen Swamp Watershed.

2. Achieve an area-wide reduction in ground water nitrate concentrations.

3. Transfer information on BMPs and the predictive capability of water quality models to other watersheds and regions.

Short-Term Objectives

1. Conduct an educational program to gain producers' awareness and cooperation.

2. Continue to encourage BMPs for crop production and animal waste management.

3. Establish a mortality management system for composting dead turkeys with litter.

Accomplishments

1. BMPs have been implemented on an area-wide basis and have resulted in reduced nitrate levels in surface and ground water.

Significance of Accomplishments This Hydrologic Unit Project is one of many being conducted around the country that demonstrates educational programs, technical assistance and cost share, motivate BMP implementation that results in protection and enhancement of surface and ground water.

Future Plans

1. Continue to encourage management and implementation of BMPs to protect and enhance surface and ground water.
