Extension Water Quality and Waste Management Initiative Task Force

Long-Term Objectives:

1. Enhance the overall Extension education program on water quality.


Short-Term Objectives:

1. Develop hard copy of educational materials.

2. Make NCCES water quality publications available on national and NCSU electronic databases.

3. Develop decision-support systems for water quality management which will be available electronically through NCSU.

4. Increase public education and awareness about drinking water issues.


Accomplishments:

1. Almanac at NCSU is an electronic listing of all NCCES water quality educational materials available.

2. Arrangements are being developed with the National Water Quality Database to give identification to NCCES material.

3. WATERSHEDS, a decision-support system for water quality, is being constructed.

4. Lead and nitrate screenings have been conducted in several counties in response to public concern over drinking water quality.

5. Regional marketing materials were developed for the Southern Region Extension Water Quality Planning Committee.


Significance of Accomplishments

NCCES has become recognized as a leader in water quality education on a regional, national and international basis.


Future Plans

1. Continue to develop new programming and techniques to keep NCCES at the cutting edge of water quality educational activities and to enhance water quality and waste management program accomplishments and recognition.

2. Continue to conduct lead and nitrate screening programs in North Carolina's counties to determine the extent of lead and nitrate contamination in drinking water supplies, evaluate private well water quality and the level of well protection, and educate citizens on issues related to drinking water safety, including proper well construction and protection.

3. Offer mini-grants for water quality improvement projects.
