Prepared by: Gregory Jennings, Carolyn Mojonnier

Long-Term Objectives:

1. Educate coastal residents, landscapers, developers, and local officials on practices to reduce sedimentation and pollution of coastal waters.

Short-Term Objectives:

1. Conduct a series of Workshops to describe sedimentation control and pollution prevention measures for coastal areas.

2. Implement a series of demonstration sites showing sedimentation control and pollution prevention measures throughout the coastal region.

3. Develop educational materials to be used by Extension Agents and others in educating coastal audiences on sedimentation control and pollution prevention.

Accomplishments:

1. Conducted 5 Workshops with more than 400 participants.

2. Implemented 18 demonstration sites in 9 counties.

3. Initiated development of 8 fact sheets and 5 slide sets.

The educational program is cooperative with the North Carolina Division of Land Resources and numerous local organizations in the coastal area. The demonstration projects address several coastal environmental issues, including: Golf course management; Wetland enhancement for pollution control; Native plant educational exhibit; Coastal landscape plant production and maintenance; Roadbank stabilization; Beach dune stabilization; and Marsh/breakwater improvement.

Future Plans

1. Continue ongoing educational program throughout the coastal area.

2. Increase support for Extension Agents conducting local educational programs to non-traditional audiences including realtors, developers, lending institutions, governmental officials.
