Swine Nutrient Management

Long-term Objectives

1. Educate pork producers on proper nutrient management practices.

2. Educate the general population on nutrient management practices followed by pork producers.


Short-term Objectives:

1. Develop and assist in delivery of Animal Waste Operators Certification Program.

2. Educate producers and assist in developing farm plane in compliance with the .0200 regulations.

3. Educate general population on swine nutrient management practices.


Accomplishments:

1. Provided educational opportunities for over 225 pork producers.

2. Conducted water quality tours for elected officials and representatives of environmental agencies.

3. Initiated inter-agency projects to evaluate alternatives for dead hog disposal.

4. Provided information to general public through radio and newspaper interviews.


Significance of Accomplishments:

Educational programs on swine nutrient management have assisted 42 pork producers in preparing their registration forms for the .0200 regulations and provided further information to an additional 200 producers on best management practices. Information and interviews provided to newspapers and radios has reached all of Northeastern, North Carolina. Water quality tours for elected Officials have helped to increase the awareness of how nutrients are handled in local communities and established relationships and contacts for future use. Dead hogs in Northeastern, North Carolina are presently either incinerated or buried, raising concerns on air and water pollution. The establishment of sites where carcasses can be collected and subsequently transported for rendering is in progress.


Future Plans:

1. Implement Animal Waste Operators Certification Program.

2. Provide proactive, research based information to pork producers and the general public on nutrient management.

3. Assist in the establishment of central collection points for dead hog disposal.
