Livestock and Poultry Waste Management Systems

Long-Term Objectives:

1. Develop and deliver educational programs and foster the advancement of technology for agricultural waste management systems.

2. Promote land application and utilization of organic by-products.

3. Preserve rural environmental quality.


Short-Term Objectives:

1. To help develop and participate in training and certification workshops for agricultural waste treatment operators.

2. To continue to facilitate the development of approved waste management plans required of each farmer meeting eligibility requirement of the 0200 water quality rules.

3. To serve in a technical capacity as a member of the Legislative Blue Ribbon Panel on Agricultural Wastes.


Accomplishments:

1. Completed a county-by-county nutrient assessment of animal waste nutrients compared to crop acreage based fertilizer nutrient needs.

2. Asssated in developing and conducting nutrient management training workshops for extension agents, NRCS staff and crop consultants.

3. Served on Swine Odor Task Force and prepared a fact sheet on management tips for swine farm odor reduction.


Significance of Accomplishments:

1. Identified high-density livestock and poultry manure nutrient-rich areas as one indicator of future growth opportunities and the sustainability of such areas.

2. Certified additional professionals to assist farmers in developing approved animal waste management plans to comply with the 0200 rules.

3. Provided information and technical input for both immediate and potential long-term reductions in odor emissions from swine farms.


Future Plans:

To assist in identifying alternative sustainable waste management and treatment systems for livestock and poultry farms and to continue as a resource person for technical information related to agricultural wastes.
