This page is about earning a Professional Engineering (PE) License and how the programs in the Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at NC State University can prepare students for an engineering career.
Not all engineers are licensed engineers or need to be as it depends on your career goals. The goal of many of our Biological Engineering students is to eventually earn a Professional Engineers License (PE). Candidates normally prepare by completing a course of study at institutions which have accredited programs in engineering.
The Biological Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Commission of ABET Inc, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012, telephone: (410) 347-7700.
In the students' last semester, just prior to graduation, our students are given an opportunity to take the Fundamentals in Engineering (FE) Exam to qualify for a Future Engineer in Training certificate (FET). This is a first step to earning a Professional Engineers License (PE). Students who pass the FE exam and who graduate from the BE degree program then receive the FET certificate. Students can choose to take the exam or not with some students preferring to wait or to take the exam in their own home state. The FET certification is generally reciprocal between states. The exam in North Carolina is given by the North Carolina Board of Registration for Engineers and Land Surveyors. This link gives all the specifics about the exams in North Carolina.
